Ophelia Dos Santos
Ophelia Dos Santos is Welsh textile designer and climate justice activist based in Cardiff. Specialising in hand embroidery – she repairs and repurposes clothing and textile waste. Whilst making positive social and environmental change, her work also serves as a visual reminder of fashions changing attitude towards sustainability; inspiring others to give old clothes a second chance.
Through her platform, Ophelia creates educational content, to inform and encourage conversation around sustainable fashion, over-consumption and equality. Working within the community, she focuses on skill sharing as a powerful tool to explore the complexities of climate change, driving participation and action. Facilitating workshops with local charities and organisations, she demonstrates how simple embroidery techniques can be used to mend and reinvent clothing. Learning to sew is a purposeful activity, that can bring people of different age groups, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds together – giving people the ability to build confidence and practical life skills.
‘A Warm Embrace’ is a colourful celebration of the support provided by Welsh Women’s Aid. Created by textile designer and climate activist Ophelia Dos Santos. Ophelia hopes the quilt will remind us of a warm embrace, such as the comfort of a blanket or hug from a loved one can be found even in the grey areas.
